Clematis armandii

Description

The Clematis armandii, the Armand clematis, is the most refined of the evergreen clematis and one of the most fragrant climbers you can grow on a UK wall. Through March and April it smothers itself in clouds of pure white, vanilla-almond scented star flowers, set against long, leathery, deeply ribbed leaves that have a tropical, almost rainforest quality to them year-round.

Originating in central and western China, this is a vigorous evergreen climber that quickly clothes a sheltered sunny wall, fence or pergola in glossy green. It is the cornerstone fragrant climber for any Hardy Exotic patio or courtyard, providing winter structure with its evergreen foliage and a spectacular spring scent show.

How and where to grow

• Position: south or west-facing sheltered wall or fence; full sun on the growth, cool shade on the roots.
• Soil: fertile, free-draining, any pH including chalk.
• Size: vigorous, climbing to around 6-9 m tall with a spread of 2-3 m.
• Hardiness: RHS H5, hardy in a sheltered position to around -15C.

‘Armandii’ is at its absolute best on a warm, sheltered patio or courtyard wall, where the spring scent can be enjoyed up close. It works equally well in a Hardy Exotic patio scheme as a winter-structural plant, and complements palms, tree ferns and bamboos in an exotic border or near a seating area. A natural choice for the back of a large container by a sunny wall or a sheltered shaded courtyard.
