Description
One of our favorite winter woodland perennials that starts flowering even before most hellebores is our native false rue anemone, Isopyrum biternatum. As we’ve botanized across the country, we’ve noticed the largest flower forms seem to occur in the coldest parts of the country. This particularly large-flowered strain comes from the former southern Minnesota garden of plant breeder Hans Hansen. The pure white daisies, which top the 8″ tall airy foliage starting in late January (NC), are more than double what we typically see with Isopyrum biternatum. Like all early spring ephemerals, false rue anemone goes summer dormant for us by June, so mark the spot. Average to slightly moist, rich, moderately high pH soils grow the best false rue anemone. The dormant rhizomes are always miniscule, so save your complaints for mother nature.
